Will the Cold Weather Affect My Healing Piercing?

A photo of London in the winter, showing the southbank covered in snow. Text reads 'Cold weather & healing piercings- what happens?'.

Can weather changes/cold weather affect my piercing?

The short answer is yes! Weather changes, whether that be from travelling or changes at home can affect your piercing in the same way it can affect your skin and hair. Cold weather in particular can causes dryness of the skin which can impact both fresh and healing piercings and it is totally normal for piercings to take a little longer to heal during colder times of the year!

What can I expect if I am healing a piercing during colder months?

Winter time is the ideal time to get pierced. Just in time for the summer- ready for swimming and having fun. however there are some important factors to take into consideration prior to receiving your new bling.

Cold air can have an impact on people's skin, which in turn can change how your body heals. The same dry skin can affect your piercing depending on the placement.

If you suffer from dry patches of skin on your face or ears, it is important that you take this into consideration before booking your piercing. You need to be aware of the best methods to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

What can I do to help?

We would recommend drinking plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated as well as regular cleaning. If your dry skin is especially bad we would suggest trying a humidifier or steam- remember to dry your piercings after exposure to moisture. The same applies to oral piercings- it is important to keep your lips hydrated and avoid chewing or picking at any dry skin.

What if I get a cold- what do I need to know?

Getting a cold during the winter months can be a regularity for some of us, knowing how to prepare and deal with healing a piercing while recovering from a cold is important! We would recommend gently blowing your nose if you're healing a nostril or septum piercing and avoiding using any nasal sticks to help with blockages. Instead, be aware of lengthened healing times and other symptoms such as piercing bumps or irritation as a result.
